I believe my problem, as it's been with Jaguars' free agencies of the past and present, is that they opted for an approach of quality over quantity in a time when the franchise is really in need of more. The problem isn't Kirk it's Kirk AND Scherff AND Olukun and Fatukasi. This means that the Jaguars with around $10M of Space (give or take). I'd have loved to see the team aim at two of these potential players, and try to pick up a handful of players at the same price that the other.
In many ways, this feels like free agency 2017. and that's not a good thing. The Jaguars spent big there too in signing Calais Campbell, A.J. Bouye, Barry Church and traded for Branden Albert. In the beginning, they seem as the "big winners," but even though they went from 3-13 to 10-6 in a matter of minutes after that, they fell back to the earth due to the fact that they didn't have the depth.
I hope this doesn't happen again, I'd just like to see that when the Jaguars worked to get this kind of cap space , they wouldn't spend so much time chasing after the ball thinking they're one piece away from competing, rather than a cellar dweller that has to work towards success slowly. I'm not sure if Jacksonville has a chance to be a champion or even a winner -but I'm more nervous.
Winner: Cincinnati Bengals
I am in love with the way the Bengals did on the opening day. My fear was that this team was likely to exceed its limit on big acquisitions like Terron Armstead or J.C. Jackson. Instead, the Bengals did smaller, intelligent deals that allow them to be immediately more efficient, and also give them the option to spend more moving forward.
G Alex Cappa, 4 years $35MC Ted Karras, 3 years and $18MRe-signed DT B.J. Hill, 3 years, $30M Cappa and Karras are the immediate starters on an offensive line that has been a disaster. Hill was an outstanding defensive player who deserved to be signed again. Most importantly: The Bengals still have $21M available to play with.
There are moves to be made to help strengthen the unit however Cincinnati has made significant progress towards fixing their biggest weaknesses immediately without being in a rush to overspend.
By no fault of their own They are the Packers lose after day 1. This is absolutely, 100 percent because of the Jaguars.Green Bay has an elite high-end receiver in Davante Adam, who will not play under an NFL tag. The Packers are required to reach an agreement for a new contract. They have to confront the issue with the backdrop of Christian Kirk's massive contract.
This is bad for them it's so poor. There's already huge cap pressure on the team, and if Kirk receives upwards of $70 million, it's fair to assume Adams will feel he's worth an offer of $100 million. That's untenable for the Packers as well, and frankly, it's a bit unfair on them for not having this extension resolved earlier, as this is a problem.
