An assisted living residence is a place for senior residents or people with disabilities who require assistance with daily activities (ADLs). These individuals may require assistance with tasks such as medication management or bathing or showering, but they may not require the 24-hour care and monitoring given by a skilled nursing facility.  Woodlands assisted living facilitiy (ALFs) in Texas are classified as personal care facilities. Establishments with a population of four or fewer individuals are exempt from licencing requirements under Texas law; facilities with a headcount of four or more people must get a licence.

The first ALFs debuted in the 1980s, when the United States was coping with an ageing but largely healthy population that lacked relatives to help satisfy its limited care needs. These individuals were opposed to entering nursing homes, which at the time provided only minimal privacy and personal choice. ALFs often provided senior living magnolia with private rooms or flats, as well as social events and outings that were optional.

ALFs currently house approximately 1 million people in the United States. Diseases that induce cognitive deficits, such as Alzheimer's or vascular dementia, affect slightly fewer than half of people. There are approximately 830 licenced personal care facilities in Texas and around 4000 unregulated facilities.

Customers in an assisted living facility are given a room and three nutritious meals each day. Additionally, the institution provides employees to assist with daily activities for senior care magnolia. Help with medication management, personal hygiene duties such as showering, dressing, and going to the bathroom are all common need. Some individuals may additionally require assistance with activities such as eating and transferring from a wheelchair.

The majority of institutions calculate costs by charging a flat leasing charge. They then assign "points" based on the level of support required by the resident. Each monthly point costs more money. For example, a woman living in a studio apartment who only required pharmaceutical assistance would spend less than a woman who required assistance with meds, bathing, dressing, and eating.

In Austin, Texas, the average base cost to live in a personal care residence in $1500. When you include assistance with care, the cost rises to about $2000. This is still less than a skilled nursing facility which typically charges anywhere from $3000 to $4000 per month.

Although some 90% of ALF residents nation wide pay for their care out-of-pocket, Texas was one of the first two states to pass legislation allowing Medicaid to cover the cost of an assisted living residence through its Community-Based Alternatives program. This program helps over 20,000 Texans who would not be able to afford assisted living care otherwise.

Texas has also established criteria for determining when an assisted living facility is no longer an appropriate placement for a person. Patients must be able to grasp emergency instructions and aid in their own evacuation in the case of a fire or other disaster in order to remain in an ALF in Texas. If a resident requires 24-hour care and supervision or intrusive treatments such as tube feeding or IV drugs, ALF care is no longer acceptable.
